Olaplex has acquired Purvala, a biotech company, the hair care brand announced on August 26, 2025. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The move signals Olaplex's intent to deepen its science-backed positioning in the premium hair care segment. Purvala's biotech capabilities could expand Olaplex's formulation pipeline, giving the brand access to new ingredient technologies developed outside its existing research infrastructure.
For CPG operators in the beauty and personal care space, the acquisition reflects a broader pattern of heritage brands buying early-stage biotech firms to accelerate innovation rather than build it internally. Olaplex, best known for its bond-building hair treatment technology, has faced increased competition from a growing field of science-forward hair care entrants. Adding proprietary biotech assets offers a path to differentiation that marketing spend alone cannot replicate.
The acquisition adds to Olaplex's intellectual property holdings at a time when ingredient credibility and clinical substantiation are increasingly important purchase drivers in the prestige hair category.
