Shopper Marketing
What is Shopper Marketing?
Shopper marketing is the discipline of influencing buying behavior at the moment of purchase. It sits between brand marketing (which builds awareness) and trade marketing (which buys distribution and shelf access). The output is in-store and on-platform: shelf talkers, coupons, branded displays, digital shelf optimization, retail media (Amazon Sponsored Brands, Walmart Connect, Instacart Ads).
Shopper marketing teams typically own customer-specific creative and programs: a Walmart-specific campaign, a Target-specific endcap creative package, an Amazon-specific A+ content rollout. Each retailer's program is different and requires its own creative production cycle.
The function has grown fast because retail media has grown fast. Walmart Connect alone is a multi-billion-dollar advertising network, with similar growth at Kroger Precision Marketing, Albertsons Media Collective, and the Amazon retail media stack. Most of the dollar growth in CPG marketing budgets over the last five years has flowed here.
The hire to recognize: a Director of Shopper Marketing or Director of Retail Media at a brand doing $50M+ in revenue. The function is often new to the organization and the person owning it usually has a customer-specific background (ex-Walmart vendor, ex-Amazon brand lead) plus a media-buying background.
Roles where this matters: Shopper Marketing, Retail Media, Trade Marketing, eCommerce.
